Four more deaths, 1,060 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported announced a further 1,060 new Coronavirus cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a fall of 85 new cases on figures given yesterday for Monday.

There have been a further four deaths (one outside the current reporting period), bringing the Department of Health’s total number of deaths from the virus (mostly in hospital settings) to 2,517.

Sadly, one of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 7,738 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 84 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of 17 on numbers given yesterday for Monday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 666 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 24,429 positive cases within the council boundary – the third highest among all 11 councils in the North.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen slightly again to 440.2 cases per 100,000, the fifth highest of all 11 council districts in the North of Ireland.

The Department has now recorded a total of 165 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the third lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is up to 103 per cent.

There are currently 397 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 34 patients being treated in intensive care with 26 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 12.24 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 36 patients with Coronavirus.

Four of those patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19 – that’s 36.6 per cent of its ICU beds treating patients with the deadly virus.

The hospital is currently running at 3.28 per cent above capacity.

A total of 102 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 819 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of 23 out of 69 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.
