Five more deaths, 1,020 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported announced a further 1,020 new Coronavirus cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a rise of 131 new cases on figures given yesterday for Saturday.

There have been a further five deaths (none outside the current reporting period), bringing the Department of Health’s total number of deaths from the virus (mostly in hospital settings) to 2,509.

Sadly, one of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 8,277 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 101 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of seven on figures given on Friday for Thursday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 685 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 24,244 positive cases within the council boundary – the third highest among all 11 councils in the North.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen slightly to 454.2 cases per 100,000, the fifth highest of all 11 council districts in the North of Ireland.

The Department has now recorded a total of 164 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the third lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 102 per cent.

There are currently 379 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 33 patients being treated in intensive care with 27 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 13.91 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 35 patients with Coronavirus.

Four of those patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19 – that’s 40 per cent of its ICU beds treating patients with the deadly virus.

The hospital is currently running at 3.55 per cent above capacity.

A total of 107 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 806 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of 23 out of 70 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.
