Eight more deaths, 1,199 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported a further 1,199 new Coronavirus cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

There have been a further eight deaths (two outside the current reporting period), bringing the Department of Health’s total number of deaths from the virus (mostly in hospital settings) to 2,461.

Sadly, one of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 10,180 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 88 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of 74 on figures given on Friday for Thursday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 937 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 23,572 positive cases within the council boundary – the third highest among all 11 councils in the North.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen to 619.4 cases per 100,000, the third highest of all 11 council districts in the North of Ireland.

The Department has now recorded a total of 160 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the third lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 104 per cent.

There are currently 401 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 41 patients being treated in intensive care with 32 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 19.27 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 52 patients with Coronavirus.

Six of those patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19 – that’s 75 per cent of its ICU beds treating patients with the deadly virus.

The hospital is currently running at 3.36 per cent above capacity.

A total of 120 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 782 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of 26 out of 70 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.
