DUP duo take up disabled parking bay issue with Minister

DUP MP Gregory Campbell MP and Foyle MLA Gary Middleto have taken up a problem with disabled parking bays at a newly constructed park n’ ride facility at Drumahoe.

The DUP politicians said: “The recently opened park ‘n’ ride car park at Drumahoe is a welcome facility which in conjunction with the soon to be completed A6 dual carriageway will improve journey times and road safety from the Drumahoe location to Dungiven and will be a boon to travellers on the Londonderry – Belfast bus route.

“However, having been contacted by disabled people who complained about the location of some of the disabled parking bays we have taken the matter up with the Disability Action charity and the Minister.

“The bus shelter where people would board or exit the bus has a range of parking bays immediately adjacent to it, but many of the disabled bays rather than being located at that point beside the shelter are located some 60 – 70 metres beyond the able bodied parking bays and the shelter.

“This is absurd.

“The charity have indicated in their response they agree with the complaint.

“Hopefully the Minister will see the common sense in relocating the furthest disabled bays closer to the bus shelter.

“The park ‘n ride facility is obviously not yet fully utilised as it has just been completed and the road scheme is not yet finished but in a few months the problems we are highlighting will become much worse.

“A fairly straightforward change will help to achieve the main purpose for which disabled bays are provided at large car parks.

“The Minister needs to act now.”
