Twelve further deaths, 793 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced a further 793 cases in the North of Ireland in the last 24 hours.

That’s a huge fall rise of 679 on figures given yesterday for Tuesday.

There have been a further 12 deaths in the past 24 hours (one outside the current reporting period) bringing the the total number of deaths here linked to Covid-19 (mostly in hospitals) since the start of the pandemic to 2,385.

None of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 9,393 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 114 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of four on figures given yesterday for Tuesday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 1,051 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 21,999 positive cases within the council boundary – the third highest among all 11 councils in the North.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen to 694.7 cases per 100,000, still the second highest of all 11 council districts in the North of Ireland.

The Department has recorded a total of 156 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the third lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 106 per cent.

There are currently 417 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 46 patients being treated in intensive care with 38 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 17.07 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 54 patients with Coronavirus.

Four of those patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19 – that’s 40 per cent of its ICU beds treating patients with the deadly virus.

The hospital is currently running at 9.58 per cent above capacity.

A total of 135 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 743 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of 25 out of 70 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.
