‘Time council promoted Derry as city of learning’

Magee campus at the Ulster University in Derry

THE SDLP’s Higher Education spokesperson Sinéad McLaughlin says that the opening of the Magee Medical School on Monday is the right moment for Derry City and Strabane District Council to step up its promotion of Derry as a city of learning and education.

She said this would help to increase demand for student places in Derry.

Ulster University has previously indicated that student demand is an important factor in its allocation of places between its campuses.

Said the Foyle MLA: “The SDLP is determined that Derry should be a major seat of learning, as befits a city in which two Nobel laureates -John Hume and William Campbell – were born and a third, Seamus Heaney, attended school.

“It is essential that our city achieves the social and economic benefits of being a full sized university city, as has happened in many similar sized and smaller cities, such as Galway and Lincoln. Derry must strive to emulate this success.

“Derry is a beautiful, friendly and affordable city – the type of place in which students love to live.

“Now is the time to spread this message.

“Derry City and Strabane District Council is the organisation well placed to lead this campaign, promoting study at Magee campus and at the North West Regional College.

“I call on the council to encompass this in an even stronger way in its marketing of the city.”
