SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has welcomed Executive support for an SDLP proposal to establish a new Infrastructure Commission with a clear remit and mandate to improve environmental performance, economic growth, community connections and wellbeing.

Establishing an Infrastructure Commission was an SDLP Manifesto pledge aimed at breaking the silo mentality of government departments and providing expert advice on the delivery of large-scale projects on a long-term basis.

Said the Foyle MP: “I am pleased that the Executive has given its support to the SDLP proposal for a new Infrastructure Commission that will advise on delivering large scale transformative projects that will enhance economic growth, connect our communities and help tackle the climate crisis.

“This is a big, bold idea and it is another example of the SDLP delivering in government.

“Executive departments have historically been guilty of silo thinking when it comes to capital projects.

“This new commission, led by experts with significant experience in delivering complex infrastructure, will be able to cut through those problems and deliver independent recommendations with a long term vision.

“This was an SDLP manifesto pledge and demonstrates our commitment to transforming communities across the North. We are ambitious for this place and its people.

“SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has been at the front of these efforts.

“I look forward to further Executive support and speedy implementation of this proposal.”
