Macmillan Move More team complete Mighty Hike around Derry

Participants in the Derry and Strabane Macmillan Move More project have completed an epic hike around the city to raise funds for Cancer Support.

The original challenge was for Council’s GP Referral Scheme Coach Rosie O’Brien, Brendan O’Brien from the Recycling team and Macmillan Move More Co-ordinator Sean Hargan to complete a hike around the North Coast of Ireland.

When that event was cancelled due to Covid restrictions they teamed up with Move More participants Aisling Murray, Anna Marie Roddy and her husband Michael Roddy to walk a 13.2 mile route that started at the Foyle Arena and took in both banks of the river and many of the City’s landmarks including the City Walls, Guildhall and Peace Bridge.

The walkers were joined for the last mile by other Move More participants as the challenge finished at Ebrington Square where they were greeted by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council. Alderman Graham Warke.

The initiative has raised over £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Move More Co-ordinator Sean Hargan thanked everyone who donated.

“The original challenge was cancelled but so many people had sponsored us that we still wanted to hold an event,” he explained.

“We were delighted that the Move More Programme participants were able to join us and on behalf of them all we’d like to thank everyone for their generous sponsorship.

“Covid has reduced our opportunities to raise funds over the last 15 months and the events which have happened have been at a reduced level so we really appreciate the support.”

Move More NI is delivered by Macmillan Cancer Support working in partnership with physical activity providers, local councils and health and social care trusts all over Northern Ireland to provide the support that people living with cancer need to improve their fitness.

There is still time to sponsor the team’s fundraising efforts on their Just Giving page at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rosie-sean?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=rosie-sean&utm_campaign=pfp-tweet&utm_term=517288c2985044149d9e0f7801f94ab3
