Day of Thanks: Mayor pays tribute to local groups

THE Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Alderman Graham Warke, will join with local authority leaders from across the UK in paying tribute to all those who assisted the community effort in response to Covid 19 during a special day of thanks taking place this Sunday, July 4.

The Local Authorities Thank You Day will be marked by hundreds of organisations who will issue a resounding ‘thank you’ to the many thousands of people who gave their time to help others during the health crisis.

Speaking ahead of the day, Alderman Warke took the opportunity to acknowledge the amazing community effort that supported the sick and vulnerable for the many months of lockdown.

“Hundreds of community and voluntary workers stepped up when it mattered most and their efforts have been absolutely critical in the response to this health crisis delivering vital aid to all who needed it,” he declared.

“So many people of all ages gave up their time to ensure essential supplies could be delivered to the vulnerable and provided a listening ear for anyone struggling with the challenges of social isolation.

“On July 4th I would ask everyone to join me in showing their appreciation for all those who got involved. Despite the challenges we came together as a community and demonstrated the grit, resilience and generosity of spirit that sets our City and District apart.”

Last month Council approved plans to scope out a number of proposals to formally recognise the contribution of the community and voluntary sector during the Covid pandemic.

Members approved an allocation of £10,000 to support the plans which will be delivered over the next six months.

The campaign kicked off with Volunteers Week at the beginning of June which highlighted the impact of groups and volunteers across the Council area.

Ald Warke said the Recognition and Thank You campaign would go some way towards acknowledging the tremendous work that had been delivered.

“In the coming months Council has a number of plans to recognise all those who played such an important role in our response to Covid-19.

“These include proposals for an online Book of Tribute, a public artwork, and a special Thanksgiving event later in the year, to be delivered subject to the guidelines.

“Although this was a very dark time for all of us, it’s only right that we look back and reflect on this chapter in our history with pride, and share the positive message of hope and endurance as we look towards brighter days ahead.”
