SDLP Economy spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin

THE SDLP’s Sinéad McLaughlin has today called on the Justice Minister to provide an update on the progress of the implementation of standardized Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE) in schools in the North of Ireland.

The introduction of RSE was recommended in the Gillen Review Report into the law and procedures in serious sexual offences in the North of Ireland.

The report, which made its findings in 2019, recommended that a plan was created to urge all schools to include RSE within the curriculum.

It is mandatory for all students in Ireland to study RSE throughout compulsory education.

Said the Foyle MLA: “Comprehensive relationship and sex education is vital to ensure our young people grow up with understandings of safe and healthy relationships.

“This was a clear recommendation of the Gillen Review over two years ago and it is well past time that it was delivered.

“It is vital that the Executive gets on with the job of implementing all the recommendations of the Gillen Review in full, including the provision of RSE for every pupil in Northern Ireland.”
