Daughters of Barney and Blossom McGlinchey hand over cheque to staff at Altnagelvin Hospital

THE FAMILY of a loving couple who passed away from Coronavirus just minutes apart have made a generous donation to the hospital where staff brought the husband and wife together for one last time as their lives ebbed away.

Barney and Sarah ‘Blossom’ McGlinchey from Greysteel died on Wednesday, January 20 this year from the effects of COVID-19 after spending almost two weeks in Altnagelvin Hospital.

They were in separate wards, but caring staff brought them together to be with each other in their final moments.

Only one of their daughters was with them due to Coronavirus restrictions.

Barney, passed away first at 4:55 pm, while his devoted wife Sarah, known affectionately to family and firends as Blossom, passed away shortly after at 5.01 pm.

The couple were holding hands when they took their last breaths.

Barney, 81, and 78-year-old Blossom, who had five children and seven grandchildren, were absolutely devoted to each other.

This week two of their daughters attended Altnagelvin Hospital to present staff with a cheque from a crowd funding page set up in memory of their parents.

The Western Trust say: “Our Intensive Care Unit and Ward 26 at Altnagelvin Hospital received a very generous donation of £7,650 from the family of the late Barney and Blossom McGlinchey, who both sadly passed away on 20 January 2021 from COVID-19.

“Their family have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the public in donating to their Just Giving page following their parents’ deaths, helping them raise funds for the hospital.

“Barney and Blossom’s daughters Libby Devine and Lynne Gray made the presentation to Carla Dunlop, ICU; Gerry McGarrigle, Ward 26c; Dr Kealan Barrett; Rebecca King, Ward 26c; Helen Kerr, Ward 26c and Fiona Higgins, ICU.”
