Martin McGuinness fly fishing competition to go ahead

THE Martin McGuinness memorial fly fishing competition will go ahead this summer in Buncrana following the easing of Covid restrictions, it has been confirmed.

The popular event will return to the Eddie Fullertion Dam lake at the Illies on Sunday, July 25.

The competition, hosted by the Martin McGuinness Foundation and the Buncrana Anglers Association, was cancelled last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson for the Martin McGuinness Foundation said: “Martin’s love of angling was well known and whenever he managed to find a bit of spare time, he would take the opportunity to do a bit of fishing.

“Such times allowed him not just peace and quiet away from his hectic political duties but also provided him with a bit of space to reflect and recharge.

“Therefore, the annual fly fishing competition, jointly hosted by the Foundation and the Buncrana Anglers Association, is a very appropriate way to remember him and has already proved to be a hugely popular event.”

Since its launch in 2018, the event honoured two of Mr McGuinness’s two loves – fly fishing and the Illies, the home of his late mother.
