SDLP to oppose Policing Bill at Westminster

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP has said today that SDLP MPs will be voting against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill in Westminster this week.

The Foyle MP repeated his call for the British Government and the Executive to act now to tackle violence against women.

Said Mr Eastwood: “The tragic death of Sarah Everard last week has ignited a conversation across these islands about violence against women and I join those calling for the Government to take action to keep women safe on our streets.

“I want to offer my condolences to the family and loved ones of Sarah Everard.

“Instead of bringing forward a tangible action plan, the British Government are rushing forward with a bad piece of legislation to strengthen the hand of the Police in England and in Wales, something people will find very difficult to reconcile given the appalling actions of the Met force last night in London.

“If this legislation is passed, it could lead to harsher penalties for damaging a statue than for attacking a woman. That is completely unjust and unjustifiable.

“In the North, we know all too well the danger of an unchecked and unaccountable Police force. The SDLP will join progressive parties across Westminster to oppose this Bill.

“The UK Government would be better served spending their time acting to tackle the scourge that is violence against women, putting in place long overdue protections for women against unacceptable violence, including action against domestic homicides, rape and street harassment.”
