Eastwood: No trade deals with genocidal countries

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

AFTER the vote on Lords amendments to the Trade Bill in the House of Commons last night, SDLP Leader and Member of Parliament for Foyle Colum Eastwood has called out the British government for voting to reject concerns from the House of Lords of brokering trade deals with countries who have committed genocide.

Said the Foyle MP: “Last night’s vote on the Trade Bill in the House of Commons the British government refused to back an amendment from the House of Lords which would stop the British government from brokering trade deals with countries who have committed genocide.

“By entering into trade deals with countries who have committed the heinous act of genocide, this British government is essentially legitimising their crimes.

“There should be no trade deals with countries that commit genocide.

“When this Bill comes again before the House of Commons, the SDLP will vote once more and stand against any trade deals with countries who’ve committed genocide.”
