THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed a commitment of investment to the Strathfoyle Greenway in the Department for Communities latest draft budget.

He said the contribution will assist in the progress of this long-awaited project.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased to see the inclusion of Strathfoyle Greenway in the latest Department for Communities draft budget allocations.

“Strathfoyle Greenway will be completely transformational for Derry and its surrounding areas.

“It is a project myself and the community, have worked tirelessly to secure and progress in recent years despite facing many challenges along the way.

“And while the journey is not yet over, this cash boost and commitment will be a great help in the progression of this vital local amenity.

“In September 2020, the Infrastructure Minister announced a £1.28 million investment representing 50% of the projected capital.

“I subsequently called upon Derry City and Strabane District Council to work alongside DAERA and the Department for Communities to secure the remaining funding, as this project clearly ticks boxes in tackling rural isolation and disadvantage. .

“Developing active travel routes such as this one prioritises pedestrians and cyclists, encourages the uptake in active travel and will bring a multitude of benefits for the environment and people’s overall health. In keeping a continued focus on green infrastructure, we can create greener, more sustainable societies while tackling the climate emergency head on.

“There is work yet to be done but this investment from the Department for Communities will see this vital project one step closer to fruition.”
