SDLP councillor and Chair of Derry and Strabane PCSP Martin Reilly

THE Chair of the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Councillor Martin Reilly, has appealed to local people to continue to follow the guidance around Covid-19, paying tribute to the huge effort that is already having an impact on local infection rates.

Cllr Reilly was speaking as thousands of 65-69 year olds signed up online for the latest phase of the vaccination programme.

He took the opportunity to thank everyone for adhering to the government restrictions but warned that more needed to be done to support the health service.

“It is welcome to see that the efforts of the people of this City and District are having a significant impact on the Covid-19 infection rate locally,” said Cllr Reilly.

“We have rallied together as a community and responded to the call to act when our actions were most critical.

“I want to thank everyone for taking on board the health and safety guidance and for supporting our frontline health service workers during this time of escalated pressure on services.

“This is not a time to become complacent – we must keep up the momentum which has been making such a difference in recent weeks.

“Please follow the instructions and stay at home unless absolutely necessary. Only leave home to exercise, not for recreation, and if you are out be mindful of others and follow the social distancing rules.

“Do not meet up with friends, remember that you can exercise only with people from your own household or one other person from another household.

“Wear a mask – don’t put others at risk unnecessarily and continue to adhere to the guidelines, advice and restrictions issued by our public health experts.

“The single most important action we can all take is to stay at home to protect the health service and save lives.

“I appreciate that these are very difficult times for everyone but as the vaccine programme is now well underway there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“I want to urge everyone to continue to play their part and protect loved ones and our frontline workers by following the guidelines and restrictions in place.

“What we choose to do today will actually save lives.”
