Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Martina Anderson

THE Department of Infrastructure must accelerate improvement works at Pennyburn junction in order to avoid delaying the Fort George development, Sinn Féin’s Martina Anderson has said.

The Foyle MLA was commenting after raising the issue with the Infrastructure Minister Nicola Mallon.

Said Ms Anderson: “The proposals to develop a new health hub at Fort George coupled with the potential expansion of the Catalyst building will clearly increase traffic and pollution at what is already a very busy roundabout and junction.

“Improvements to the roundabout are proposed as part of the A2 Buncrana Road dualling project which is still at development stage and may require a public inquiry due to the impact on homes and businesses on the Buncrana Road.

“It is vital that the upgrade of the Pennyburn roundabout is not held up by this process.

“I have therefore written to the Minister for Infrastructure Nicola Mallon asking her to separate the upgrade of the Pennyburn roundabout from the wider A2 dualling process to allow work to begin as soon as possible and remove any negative impact on the development of Fort George.”
