WORK got underway this week in Drumahoe District Park as part of a series of Small Parks Village Renewal Projects being carried out by Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The work in Drumahoe is the third of four projects to get underway following commencement on similar projects in Ardstraw and Artigarvan, with Donemana also on the list for works.

The combined cost of the four projects is £200,000 and it is being delivered by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from funding allocated by Derry and Strabane Rural Partnership under Priority 6 (LEADER) of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.

The work in Drumahoe District Park will involve a new accessible access path which will connect into the existing path network, as well as adult trim trail equipment, tree planting and new signage.

The park will remain open, but the public are asked to be patient as construction takes place.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, welcomed the news that contractors have begun work.

“It’s great to see work getting underway on this project will which make Drumahoe District Park a more accessible place for all, and a more enjoyable space to use.

“Whether people just want to go out for a nice walk and enjoy the fresh air, or have a go on the new equipment, it will promote physical activity and improve mental health for everyone of all ages and abilities in the Drumahoe area.

“This work is also in line Council’s Green Infrastructure Plan, which focuses on utilising natural spaces to provide environmental, economic and social benefits for communities.”

Mary Hunter, Chair of Derry and Strabane Rural Partnership (LAG), said: “The LAG are delighted to see this project progress.

“The park is a well-used area by the Drumahoe community and the new accessibility works incorporating exercise equipment will further expand its offering.

“It will be very beneficial to see more people being able to access outdoor space and equipment for health and well-being.”

Andrew Russell, Drumahoe Community Association member, added: “It’s great to see the contractors getting underway on this project which we know will make Drumahoe District Park an even more scenic and attractive place for everyone in our community to use.”
