Nearly 40 street lights out in five minute walk in Bogside – Logue

Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue

SINN Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has said she was shocked at the results of a survey carried out by the local Martin McGuinness Cumann in which it found a high level of street light outages in a wide geographical area of the Bogside.

Councillor Logue said “Over recent months I have been receiving complaints about street lights being out in the Bogside. It seemed a very high number going on the level of phone calls I was getting.

“Constituents also had concerns because they have elderly relatives living in several sheltered accommodations in the district and said due to the lights being out it left their relatives fearful of venturing out once it gets dark.

“Following on from these concerns the Martin McGuinness Cumann decided to carry out a survey and shockingly it has come back with the results that in just one of the areas they looked at there are nearly 40 streetlights are not working.

“The area concerned is just a five-minute walk in any direction stretching from Westland Street over to William Street with the bordering areas of Rossville Street, Frederick Street and Blucher Street.

“That’s very high for just one area.

“It’s an area that is always very busy due to its proximity to the city centre and local tourist sites.

“It’s important that there is as much resources as possible made available to carry out these repairs before the onset of Winter.

“I have been in contact with Transport NI to report all these outages.

“If any resident in the area has a street lighting complaint please feel free to contact me and I will try and get it repaired,” she added.
