Popular sports journalist Kevin McLaughlin interviewing Derry City manager Declan Devine.

Well-known and popular Derry sports journalist Kevin McLaughlin has taken to Twitter to thank friends, fellow sports journalists and the public for messages wishing him a speedy recovery.

Kevin is recovering in hospital after he was struck by a car while out walking at Eglinton.

A journalist with The Derry Journal newspaper, Mr McLaughlin also takes part in sports programmes with the city’s Drive 105 community radio station and is well-known for his coverage of Derry City FC and Institute FC.

He was taken to hospital by air ambulance following the accident near a service station in Eglinton on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood he is being treated for back injuries.

Writing on Twitter, Kevin said: “First of thanks for all the good luck messages.

“You’s don’t know how much it means to me & sorry I can’t get back to everyone individually.

“Secondly I’m getting there but it’s going to take me a while to recover from this but I’ll just take it one day at a time – Kevin McLaughlin”

He added: “Hopefully see you’s all soon.

“I think I’m entitled to say 2020 can well and truly do one.”

Richard Moore of Drive 105 said everyone at the station was sending their best wishes for his recovery.

“Kevy is very much part of our Match Night Live team where his incredible knowledge of sport is always well received.

“Everyone at Drive 105 wishes him a speedy recovery and a speedy return to sport.”

In a post on Twitter Derry City also sent “best wishes for a speedy recovery to our friend and colleague”.

We wish Kevin a speedy recovery.
