Coronavirus: SDLP secures Assembly support for workers and businesses

SDLP Foyle MLA and Energy spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Economy Spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin has welcomed Assembly support for an SDLP motion, calling on the Minister for the Economy to bring forward a radical economic intervention programme to support workers and businesses.

The Foyle MLA said: “It is clear that the COVID-19 restrictions, while wholly necessary to save lives and keep people well, have had a profound impact on our economy.

“The economic projections for the end of this year are frightening, as we look toward 100,000 unemployed across the North.

“These startling figures are set in the context of a furlough cliff edge and the end of the Brexit transition period in mere weeks.”

“With this in mind, it is gobsmacking that the Minister for the Economy has not yet produced a long term economic recovery strategy.

“She has failed to bring forward tailored schemes to support those who have fallen through the cracks and while the ending of the furlough scheme is a British Government miscalculation, the Executive has failed to prepare local schemes to support workers.

“People across the North are worried about the rising COVID-19 rates but they are also deeply worried about the impact of the economic crisis on them and their families.

“They want to hear from Executive Ministers how they intend to support them through this time of turmoil and how they will build back better. Sadly, this leadership has been lacking.

“I welcome the Assembly support for our motion.

“I sincerely hope the Ministers for the Economy and Finance will heed our call and bring forward a radical economic intervention programme, supporting workers and promoting new jobs.

“People across the North demand nothing less.”
