DERRY City and Strabane District Council will join schools and other organisations in a range of activities to highlight the importance of recycling as part of Recycle Week, which runs from tomorrow, Monday, September 21 to Sunday, September 27.
The theme for Recycle Now’s 17th annual Recycle Week is to thank the people of Derry and Strabane District for continuing to recycle despite all that has happened this year.
Recently collected figures show that throughout lockdown recycling and becoming more environmentally aware has been a priority for local people.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, explained how Council are taking part.
“More and more people in our District are recycling and it’s great to see.
“To mark Recycle Week 2020 we’re saying a big thank you to everyone by giving every household a free Indoor Recycling Bag making it easier to separate recyclable materials at source and store them in the kitchen or bathroom before putting them outside in the blue bin.
“We’re also encouraging all local schools to send us pics of their recycling efforts in the classroom to our social media platforms using #RecycleWeek and we’ll be giving away some eco goodies to the best submissions.
He added: “Re-use is also key to protecting our planet and we’ve teamed up with Zero Waste North West to launch an e-leaflet on Zero Waste parenting which includes info on ways to save money and reduce waste by making changes like opting for reusable nappies and wipes rather than disposable versions.
“This also contains details on how to apply for Council’s Nappy Cashback Scheme where you can claim back £30 when you spend £50 or more on washable nappies.
“Tune into our upcycling webinar on Thursday for tutorials on how to give fashion and furniture items in your home a new lease of life.
“Finally, I’d like to thank our frontline recycling workers who have been stoical and steadfast in their civic duties over the last six months.
“We would really be lost without them and the service they provide in hail, rain or snow.”
Ian Garner, Head of WRAP NI, said: “It’s fantastic to see that despite everything that has been thrown at them this year, more people than ever in Derry City and Strabane District Council are taking responsibility for protecting the environment by choosing to recycle.
“This is something we can all do, wherever we live – an individual action that, when performed by everyone, adds up to a huge change.
“Council’s recycling and waste workers have been real heroes too, providing the best service possible under the most difficult of circumstances.
“The recognition they received in the form of friendly waves, notes, cards and gifts left out for them is heart-warming proof of how local people have cooperated.
“Recycle Week this year is an opportunity to thank everyone in our community for continuing to recycle, whatever their circumstances and to celebrate the way we have all pulled together.
“There has been a positive leap forward in attitudes that we must capitalise on so Derry and Strabane can do even better in the coming year!”
