Taxi drivers have been hit hard because of the Coronavirus pandemic

TAXI and bus licenses are to be automatically renewed to help the transport sector recover from the pandemic, the North’s infrastructure minister has announced.

“I understand how difficult it has been for the bus and taxi industry in recent times and I have acted throughout the COVID-19 crisis to provide regulatory easements to assist these important industries,” Nichola Mallon said.

Taxi drivers whose licence expires between this October and March 2021 will now receive a 12-month licence, while those who have already received a six-month licence will now receive a licence for a further six months.

There is no application process or charge.

A free automatic 12-month licence will also be issued to bus operators.

“I hope this further easement will assist the bus and taxi industry to continue to operate during these uncertain times as we move towards recovery,” the minister added.
