SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Infrastructure, Nichola Mallon, that she will meet with the Strathfoyle Greenway Steering Group to discuss the progression of this project.

Said Mr Durkan: “I am pleased that Minister Mallon has agreed to my request to meet with the local Steering Group, of which I am a member, to discuss the Strathfoyle Greenway project.

“Investment in our greenways is a key component in our green recovery plan and Minister Mallon’s continued focus on such infrastructure will be hugely beneficial for the North.

“Developing active travel routes that prioritise pedestrians and cyclists will be crucial in tackling a myriad of issues including health and well-being as well as the environmental

“The long-awaited Strathfoyle Greenway could be completely transformational for the city and its surrounding areas.

“In addition to the Department of Infrastructure, it falls to Derry City and Strabane District Council to put in a funding bid for this project, as well as exploring additional funding resources from DAERA and the Department for Communities.

“In doing so, we can create greener, more sustainable societies while tackling the climate emergency head on.

“I look forward to our meeting with Minister Mallon and will continue to work to advance Strathfoyle Greenway, which should prove a huge boost for the local community and provide a great addition to our existing walking and cycling network.”
