Concern over open telecommunication cabinets – Logue

DERRY Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has appealed for people not to interfere with the green telecommunications cabinets that are visible on many streets across the city.

She made her appeal after being contacted about one of the cabinets being open and the dangers of children being seen in and around it.

Councillor Logue said “There are dozens of these green cabinets across our city providing telecommunications to local homes and businesses.

“From time to time you will find someone has tampered with the locks and these cabinets are left open with the wires and other equipment visible to anyone passing.

“At the weekend I was contacted by residents concerned that children had been in and around looking at one of these boxes in the Bogside.

“Some people may think these cabinets pose no danger, but they must be recognized and respected for the electrical equipment they contain.

“I would urge anyone who has a green box in their area which has been opened to take the serial number down and contact their local elected representative or the company who owns the box.

“If this appeal prevents any sort of accident then it will have been worth it.”
