SINN Féin’s Karen Mullan has congratulated the local community who donated to an online fundraiser to purchase tablet devices for the vulnerable in the community during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking as 10 of these tablets were donated to the DEEDs project at the Old Library Trust, the Foyle MLA said: “A few weeks ago, Derry Sinn Féin held an online live music fundraiser to raise money to purchase tablets for the more vulnerable in our community.

“I would like to thank all the organisers & musicians who put on a fantastic day of music to support this cause.

“The donations from the community were phenomenal, and has meant we have been able to purchase these tablet devices to help keep people connected during this time.

“The community here in Derry has been outstanding throughout this pandemic, and this initiative has really highlighted this, so thank you all.

“Some tablets have been donated to Dove House, and today we have been able to donate ten more to the DEEDs project here at the Old Library Trust (OLT), which helps people who are living with dementia”

George McGowan, the project director at the Old Library Trust, said: “During COVID19, the DEEDS project has faced a number of challenges trying to keep people with dementia living well in their own surroundings.

“Their carers have been doing an amazing job, but they need support now more than ever.

“Connecting those with dementia to our online activities is essential to keep them stimulated and to a degree also helps ease the job of our carers.

“Some households did not have a way of connecting online and the tablets provided will provide a welcome relief to a lot of our carers. Thank you!”
