Requiem Mass on Thursday for late Auxiliary Bishop of Derry Francis Lagan

Former Auxiliary Bishop of Derry Francis Lagan with the late Bishop of Derry Dr Seamus Hegarty

THE funeral will take place on Thursday, June 11, for the former Auxiliary Bishop of Derry, the Most Rev Francis Lagan.

Dr Lagan, of Glen Road, Strabane, died in Altnagelvin Hospital on Tuesday, June 9.

The Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Derry was born in Brackaghreilly, Maghera, Co Derry in 1934.

Bishop Lagan was ordained a priest in 1960.

He held a number of teaching positions in the diocese which spans the Derry-Donegal border, including at St Columb’s College in Derry and at Carndonagh College and Carndonagh Community School in Co Donegal.

He also served as a curate in Strabane and as administrator of St Mary’s Parish in Derry.

His remains will leave his Glen Road home this evening, Wednesday, June 10, at 6 pm to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Strabane.

Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, at 12 noon.

Interment will be afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Glen, Maghera.

Due to recent Church Coronavirus guidelines, the house and Requiem Mass will be private to Immediate
Family only.

A family notice reads: “Beloved son of the late Francis and Roisin Lagan, much loved brother of Mary (Cassidy), Tillie (Mc Vey), Brian and the late Sr. Maria, James and John.

“Deeply regretted by Bishop Mc Keown and the Priests of the Derry Diocese, his sorrowing sisters, brother, nieces, nephews and family circle.

“Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on his soul.

“Donations in lieu of flowers please to Trocaire, c/o Quigley Funeral Directors, 1A Newtown Place, Strabane.”
