Coronavirus: Seven more people in North lose their lives to COVID-19 as toll hits 489

THE Department of Health has announced that there have have been seven more Coronavirus-related deaths in the North of Ireland.

It brings their total number of deaths, mostly focused on hospital deaths, to 489.

Four of the deaths happened since Monday, while three occurred earlier and have now been added to the Dept of Health’s toll.

Last Friday, the NI Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) published figures showing a total of 599 deaths had been recorded, up to Friday, May 8.

The statistics agency’s figures record all deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on a death certificate.

It will report at the end of this week on deaths in all settings, including care homes, hospitals, hospices and residential addresses up to Friday, May 15.

There have been 20 confirmed deaths from Coronavirus in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area to date.

Statistics also show that there has been a 163 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the council area.

Today’s update from the Department of Health shows there have now been more than 49,891 tests carried out here.

A total of 4,421 people have tested positive for COVID-19 – that’s a further 20 new cases confirmed on Tuesday.

Today’s figures show there are 16 patients with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 currently occupying intensive care beds.

The total number of confirmed outbreaks in care homes is 71.

An outbreak is confirmed where at least two residents or staff have had a positive COVID-19 test in the last 14 days.
