McLaughlin urges signoff for Magee medical school this week

SDLP Economy Spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin has reiterated her call for a decision to be approved on the medical school for Derry.

Said the Foyle MLA: “We now have just three weeks to get this over the line and deliver on the expansion of Magee, a promise made to Derry 50 years ago.

“If a decision is not made in the next few weeks, we will have wasted another year, 2021, where we could have been training doctors and providing capacity to our health service.

“That would be a terrible tragedy and the people of Derry will struggle to accept it.

“The case is crystal clear and the additional money is available, secured by Colum Eastwood MP in the New Decade, New Approach document.

“All that is left is for the Department of Health, Department for the Economy and Department of Finance, and their Ministers, to end this game of pass the parcel, make the decision and deliver it.

“We repeat our call for a decision to be made urgently.

“The Executive will meet on Monday and the Medical School must be top of their agenda.

“Time is fast running out and patience is wearing thin.

“I urge all Executive Ministers to make a call this week. Let’s get it done, together.”
