FOYLE MP Colum Eastwood has welcomed the newly announced support package of £5.7 million from the Department of Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon, which will help the running costs of both City of Derry Airport and Belfast City.

“Since taking up post, SDLP Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon has demonstrated a genuine commitment to tackling the regional imbalance that exists and addressing years of neglect in the North West,” said Mr Eastwood.

“This package is welcome news

and reflects the Minister’s commitment.

“The City of Derry airport is crucial to the economic future of the city and for growth in the whole of the North West.

“I have lobbied extensively the British Government, working with Ministers in London, and our local Executive to make this funding available and protect our regional connectivity.

“I am pleased they have heeded our call.

“This support package of £5.7 million announced by the Infrastructure minister Nichola Mallon to aid both Belfast City and City of Derry Airport will go a long way in ensuring the long-term viability of the airport and support ongoing growth in our local and regional economy.

“This airport support package is not only helping with the operating costs of the airport but it will protect jobs, trade and tourism in the North west.

“I’m pleased that the Executive, led by Minister Mallon, has acted to protect Derry from losing an important driver of economic development.”
