Coronavirus: Durkan calls for expediency to issue Charity Sector funding

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

SDLP Social Justice Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has called for expediency to distribute funds to charity organisations affected by COVID-19.

Following the announcement of the multi-million package for the Charity Sector announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak earlier this month, Mr Durkan wrote to Communities Minister Hargey for clarification on the implications for the North.

Said the Foyle MLA: “At the outset of this announcement Secretary of State, Brandon Lewis MP advised the Charity Sector in the North would receive at least £10 million funding.

“Unfortunately, the Department for Communities have been unable to clarify if this figure is indeed correct.

“However, I welcome news that officials are currently working to develop a funding programme so that payments can be issued to organisations as quickly as possible.

“The Charity Sector have been left in the dark up until now without the help they so desperately need.

“So many charities are seeing an increase in demand, reduction in donations and added financial pressures as a direct result of this crisis.

“It is crucial that the Charity Sector is supported, so they in turn can continue supporting others.

“They have and continue to provide a lifeline to many vulnerable people within our communities.

“I hope that distributing these vital funds is treated with expediency to ensure charity organisations can maintain the delivery of essential services and support during this emergency.”
