Durkan welcomes increased access to discretionary support

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

SDLP Communities Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed the increased access to emergency financial support in response to COVID-19.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I welcome this move by Minister Hargey and I was pleased to speak in favour of this legislative amendment in the Assembly.

“This move, to increase annual income threshold to £20,405, will ensure more people on low incomes have access to immediate financial support.

“This is a difficult time for people right across our community and particularly those most vulnerable, who are struggling to meet the cost of basic necessities, such as food.

“It is right that the discretionary support grant has been extended, to provide emergency relief funding for people across the North.

“The Minister must continue to explore every avenue to support our most vulnerable throughout this crisis.

“They cannot be left to weather this storm alone,” added Mr Durkan.
