Durkan urges Communities and Economy departments to act for taxi drivers in hardship

SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H Durkan has urged the Department for Communities and the Department for Economy to work together and provide support for taxi drivers facing economic hardship.

Said the Foyle MLA: “In the Assembly Chamber today, I engaged with the Minister for Infrastructure, who provided a useful update in relation to her work with the taxi industry.

“The Minister has acted, within her limited regulatory powers, to try to provide support.

“However, many taxi drivers are still facing economic hardship and cannot access any support.

“There is an obvious lack of fares and it seems to many taxi drivers, there is a lack of fairness too.

“While the Minister has acted within her powers, many difficulties still remain.

“I urge the Minister for Communities and the Minister for Economy to work together, to work proactively and develop a financial support package for taxi drivers.

“Too many have slipped through the net and are struggling.

“The relevant Ministers must support them,” he added.
