SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

SDLP social justice spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed a funding package of £1.5 million announced by the Executive to administer help through local councils during the Covid-19 crisis.

The provision made under the Community Support Fund aims to tackle poverty and provide support for the most vulnerable.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that funding has been announced to safeguard our must vulnerable amid this crisis.

“Previously, I had raised with Minister Hargey the imminent need for a Covid-19 specific support service to ensure the elderly, those experiencing financial difficulty or shielding as result of this emergency were catered for. I am glad to see this necessary step has now been taken.

“The Council have passed funding to community groups to provide a valuable, indeed vital support service to people in need across the council area.

“Many of these groups have already been active in their respective areas and should be commended for the great work they are doing.”

Mr Durkan added: “Should the public require assistance accessing these services, contact your local elected representative.

“I would also say, if you have vulnerable neighbours or relatives you feel would benefit from this assistance please make them aware of it.

“We need to look out for one another to see this crisis through safely, together.”
