McLaughlin: Fair treatment needed for small renting firms

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Economy Spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin MLA has warned that small business who pay rent and rates combined are struggling to access badly needed financial support to help them survive this pandemic.

Said the Foyle MLA: “Small firms that rent their premises have come to me because they are worried about their ability to access the Coronavirus Business Support Grant Scheme.

“Many of these businesses do not pay rates themselves, but pay it to their landlords – who are not eligible for rates bill support.

“Those firms that rent their properties may not have the necessary ratepayer information to enable them to make a claim.”

“I have spoken with the Department for the Economy, which advises that a new system and online form will be produced in the next few days.

“That new system will be designed precisely to support those businesses that rent their premises and do not pay their rates directly to Land & Property Services.

“My advice to firms in this situation is that should keep a close eye on the website nibusinessinfo.co.uk, which will be updated with the necessary information for businesses.”
