Sinn Fein Councillor and local health spokesperson Sandra Duffy

SINN Féin Health spokesperson Councillor Sandra Duffy has said there has to be a zero tolerance of abuse of medical professionals.

She made her call after being contacted my members of the medical profession with concerns that during the Coronavirus pandemic members of the public are abusing staff at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Said Councillor Duffy: “Our health and social care staff are at the front line of the battle against COVID-19 and are doing an excellent job in very challenging circumstances.

“People will be shocked to find that in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic that a tiny minority of people have been abusing staff at Altnagelvin Hospital.

“It cannot be tolerated that staff who are putting their lives on the line to save others should be subjected to this nonsense.

“The stress these workers and their families are under is immense.

“We are all indebted to their bravery.

“The verbal abuse of healthcare workers is wrong full stop.”
