15-year-old boy caught behind the wheel of car in Co Derry during lockdown

Teen boy found driving this VW Jetta car after it failed to stop for police

POLICE were shocked to find a 15-year-old boy driving a car which failed to stop for officers in Co Derry.

The teen was caught behind the wheel of a powerful 2.0 litre Volkswagen Jetta while the country is in Coronavirus lockdown and people are only supposed to be out for essential shopping for themselves or elderly relatives.

PSNI Magherafelt say on its Facebook page: “OK we don’t need to repeat the tough circumstances we’re all faced with at present.

“Just because almost everyone is at home, it doesn’t mean undesirables are.

“As well as our usual calls we are carrying out additional patrols, keeping an eye out for our regular customers to see where they are and what they are doing.

“During one such patrol today on the Station Road area in Magherafelt, this wagon attempted to make off when we attempted to stop it. Didn’t get too far.

“It wasn’t one of our regulars, but it was a 15-year-old kid out driving and clearly up to no good.

“Arrested and currently being dealt with for a host of offences.

“It would be ridiculous that crews were tied up most of the afternoon dealing with this if it was a normal day, but even worse in the current circumstances.

“When we ask ‘Where are your kids?’

“If the answer is ‘Cruisin round the felt in a 2 litre Jetta’ then you really need to do something about it.”
