Tierney: Postponing St Patrick’s celebrations the right call

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney attended a meeting of Party Leaders today at the Guildhall and has supported postponing the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Derry, given the growing public concern around Coronavirus.

Speaking following the meeting, Cllr Tierney said: “St. Patricks Day is a great time for Derry.

“Thousands of citizens and tourists visit our city to celebrate Irish culture in a positive and inclusive manner.

“Unfortunately, given the spread of coronavirus and growing concern amongst the public, I believe that as a precaution, postponing the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations is the responsible thing for us to do.

“This decision was not taken lightly.

“We have taken advice and engaged with the Public Health Agency and other health officials in advance of this decision.

“While this decision is very disappointing, as local representatives, we must prioritise protecting the health and well-being of citizens.”
