Durkan: Progress on PIP recommendations “limited”

SDLP Social Justice Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed the appointment of a second independent review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment and encouraged people to make their views heard in the process.

Said the Foyle MLA: ““I welcome the fact this process is being reviewed once again and I welcome the fact we are finally in a position, in the Assembly and Executive, to debate these critical issues and make change.

“The SDLP has long called for urgent steps to rectify the flaws in the cruel PIP process, address the multiple barriers faced by vulnerable people and ensure every person going through the process is treated with dignity and respect.

“It is important to note that the first PIP review, laid in June 2018, has made a number of important recommendations, including improving the process for those who are terminally ill, and these recommendations have not yet been actioned.

“It is vital that the legislative changes that are required to ensure our most vulnerable are protected.”
