Three more selfish drink drivers arrested by police in Derry

POLICE say they are continuing to arrest drivers in Derry despite its high profile Operation Road Safe campaign.

In recent days, three people were detected for being under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheels of cars.

One male stole his the keys to his ex-partner’s car and then crashed it into a police car.

The PSNI in Derry said those still drink driving in the city needed to realise the consequences of their actions could lead to serious injury or a fatality.

And it would be police officers who would have to call at the homes of victims to tell their families of the devastating news.

An officer writing on PSNI Foyle’s Facebook page today, said: “Knock knock.

“No. It isn’t the start of a corny joke. It’s a very real and very heart breaking sound for families all across the province.

“It’s the sound that led to a hospital visit to identify loved ones. It’s the sound that tore families apart.

“It’s the sound that has ruined Christmas for countless individuals.

“Next time you have a drink have that in your mind. Nobody deserves to die as a sacrifice for your nights craic.

“Last night a male took a set of car keys without permission from his ex-partner.

“He then collided with the rear of a police vehicle signalling for him to stop before speeding away from the scene.

“The same male was located and arrested for a long list of offences.

“I’ve also just been informed that 2 more persons have been arrested today for driving under the influence.

“It is unacceptable to put peoples lives at risk.

“The public won’t stand for it. We won’t stand for it.

“No jokes. No banter. No excuse.”

The police message is very simple: Never, ever drink and drive.
