Derry households encouraged to be energy aware

LOCAL natural gas supplier, firmus energy, is encouraging homeowners in Derry to put their energy into Energy Saving Week 2019 which is running from 18 November to 22 November.

Energy Saving Week is an industry-wide campaign to help people cut their fuel bills by tackling energy efficiency.

Pamela Beatty of firmus energy, explains: “We are delighted to be a part of this important initiative and we hope that our guidance will help families make their homes more energy efficient and save them money.

“At this time of year, the thought of a cosy, warm home is more appealing than ever and with Christmas fast-approaching, every penny counts; so it is the perfect time to make sure your home is as energy efficient as possible.

“All firmus energy employees are City and Guild’s Energy Trained and regularly advise customers on ways to cut fuel bills.

“It is surprising how much extra money families can save if a home is made as energy efficient as possible.

“One of the main ways householders are losing money is through the lack of energy efficiency of their boiler.

“People may not know that boilers of around 15 years old are very inefficient and money spent on fuel for heating your home could be wasted.

“There are many offers available to help people to make the switch to natural gas from free smart controls or shower, £200 cashback, to 0% finance to up to £1200 off your natural gas install.*

firmus customers have the reassurance that they will never run out of fuel as the colder nights come in as natural gas is piped directly to their home.

Among many other practical benefits, they also have an endless supply of instant hot water.”

There are also plenty of ‘free’ energy saving changes that can be made in and around your home, which can all add up and make a big difference to your bank account.

For example:

· Households can save around £35 a year just by remembering to turn appliances off standby.

· Many of us are letting warmth, and our cash, escape by leaving curtains and doors open. Draught-proofing windows and doors save ££’s.

· Installing smart controls in your home can help heat your home more effectively and help you save money on your energy bills. These controls can be adjusted remotely which can help prevent wasting heat whilst you’re away from the home. The additional information smart controls can provide can help you work out the perfect temperature for your home and help identify wasteful habits that may be raising your bills.

· By avoiding standby and turning off devices when not in use, the average household could save £35 off their annual electricity bill. Almost all electrical appliances can be turned off at the plug without upsetting their programming.

· A dripping tap can waste more than 5.300 litres of water a year, so ensuring your taps are properly turned off and change washers promptly when taps start to drip. Using a wash bowl is another way of saving both water and money at home. Using a bowl to wash up plates and cutlery twice a day rather than having the hot tap running could see a saving of £25 a year on your gas bill.
