Eastwood: Westminster budget determining local services

Colum Eastwood on the election trail with party members to win back Foyle Constituency

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA has said that the budget for schools, hospitals and welfare in the North is being decided at Westminster because of the failure of the DUP and Sinn Féin to reach an accommodation and restore government.

The Foyle Westminster Candidate said that those shouting about the irrelevance of the House of Commons have handed the most important decision making powers to MPs.

He said: “The most important decisions about funding for our hospitals, our schools and critical front line public services should be taken by local representatives.

“We know the pressures these services face, we have the best vision for improving this society for everyone living here.

“Yet this week, Westminster has passed another budget for us, giving the MP for Dover more influence than people in Derry.

“How can that be right?

“Thousands of people in this city have been waiting over a year for a hospital appointment.

“Thousands of parents are worried that our schools don’t have enough money for basic equipment.

“And thousands of vulnerable people are facing additional welfare cuts in March.

“Instead of rolling up our sleeves and dealing with these issues, the deadlock overseen by the DUP and Sinn Féin has handed more power to the British Government.

“More and more decisions are being taken at Westminster in our name, against our interests and without our consent.

“Derry needs an MP who’ll stand up for us, not stand aside for the Tories,” added the Foyle MLA.
