Woman brutally assaulted at her home in Bloomfield Park in Galliagh last Thursday

THE Chair of the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership Councillor Sandra Duffy has condemned the recent attack on a woman in the Galliagh area of the city.

Last Thursday, three masked men stormed the home of a woman around 10.45 pm in the Bloomfield Park area in a paramilitary-style attack.

The woman was attacked by two of the intruders and was brutally punched, slapped and struck with a hammer to her legs.

A third masked male trashed her home and smashed up windows and mirrors.

Police said her three children were home at the time who left terrified by the “traumatic ordeal”.

The woman was later taken to hospital for treatment to her non-life threatening injuries.

Speaking on the vicious assault Councillor Duffy stated: “Attacks like these are not acceptable in our society and must be condemned by all of us.

“As an elected representative for this area, I know that people are horrified and angry at this most recent attack. This brutal assault has no place in our city that is trying to move forward.

“It is clear that the criminal gangs responsible for this latest attack have absolutely no concern for people living here and their only wish is to try to exert some sort of coercive control over these areas.

“No-one has the right to violate the human rights of any individual in this city or anywhere.”

She added: “The fact that three young children were in the house while the woman was being battered and her home ransacked shows these people up for what they really are.

“My thoughts are with the victim of this horrific attack and I would urge anyone with information on this vicious assault to contact the PSNI or Crimestoppers immediately.”
