LEADING experts on environmental sustainability gathered in the city this week to discuss the latest advances as part of a special international project.
The EMERGREEN Project is funded under the Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme 2014-2020, and involves a range of partners from Sweden, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Galway, Donegal, Derry and Strabane.
Derry City and Strabane District Council hosted the two-day event in support of a series of actions being rolled out by Council to protect and enhance the environment.
EMERGREEN aims to assist remote communities become greener through use of improved technology, funded under the Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme 2014-2020.
A number of local sustainability and tech champions gathered at St Columb’s Park House to share their knowledge and insight regarding the emerging technologies that can support greener communities.
Local guest speakers at the event included Junk Kouture, Atelier Hair, Northern Ireland Water, Your Derry, Bin-ovation App and New 2 You.
Council’s Head of Environment, Conor Canning, said: “We are delighted to be part of the EMERGREEN project, developing and embracing emerging technology that will have a positive impact on our environment.
“It’s also great to learn from other countries about what technology and models have worked for them as we try to improve sustainability in our region.
“Through this initiative we want to make it easier for local people to access information on recycling, waste reduction and the circular economy.
“We hope the EMERGREEN Project will further people’s awareness of how to live in a more eco-friendly way.”
