Durkan: ‘Hot air’ response on Affordable Warmth Scheme approvals

FORMER SDLP Environment minister Mark H Durkan has received assurances from Permanent Secretary for the Department for Communities, Tracy Meharg, that resolving budgeting issues surrounding the Affordable Warmth Scheme remains an ‘utmost priority.’

Whilst welcoming the Department’s ongoing efforts, Mr Durkan has called for a speedy resolution as we approach the Autumn/Winter months.

Said Foyle MLA: “After discovering the DfC imposed moratorium on the Affordable Warmth Scheme, I have pressed upon the Department for an urgent resolution.

“Firstly, it is welcome news that Ministerial approval is not required to resolve budgeting issues affecting this scheme – removing one potential obstacle from expediting this matter.

“And whilst I appreciate that the Department is currently in the process of developing a five-year scheme approval Business Case of £80 million, this will be of no immediate benefit or solace to the hundreds of applicants currently waiting for work to be carried out.

“People who are already frustrated with lengthy delays must continue to wait for DfC to reach a budgeting resolution before approval to the Affordable Warmth Scheme is granted; never-mind the inevitable wait for subsequent work to be carried out given the ensuing backlog.

“This response has done little to allay my previous concerns and no doubt the concerns of waiting applicants, that it now seems likely many households will go another winter without these energy efficient adaptations.

“The Department must reach a resolution as soon as possible, particularly as we move into the colder months.

“I will be seeking updates at every stage from DfC, to ensure this scheme is up and running for those who need it, when they need it most.”
