Durkan: Leaked Brexit memo shows true impact of no-deal Brexit

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan says the Brexit brinkmanship must stop otherwise people in the North of Ireland will suffer immensely.

He was commenting after news reports of a leaked memo distributed to British Ministers detailed that agriculture trade could stop in the North within 24 hours, there would be ‘consumer panic’ and a security threat within 14 days of a no-deal Brexit.

Said the Foyle MLA: “This memo raises significant concerns about what will happen next if we’re forced out of Europe without a deal.

“It clearly details the unimaginable impact this could have on people, businesses and even our public sector.

“The Brexit brinkmanship now needs to change.

“The window of opportunity is closing with the October deadline fast approaching.

“Rather than antagonising the European Union and the Irish Government, the Prime Minister and his Government need to get real and realise that their path of destruction will cause many casualties – especially in the North of Ireland.

“The rights of everyone in the North need to be protected.

“No pot of money put aside by the British Government can undo the damage a no-deal Brexit will cause.

“The European Union and the Irish Government must remain steadfast in protecting the North and it’s people from economic, social and political catastrophe,” added Mr Durkan.
