Tierney urges sports clubs to apply for new Club Maintenance Programme

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has encouraged local sports clubs to apply for a new Club Maintenance Programme.

Speaking after proposing that council deliver a new programme which is aimed at helping sports clubs with maintenance costs Councillor Tierney said:

“I think this is an opportunity for council to once again show that we value the work our sports clubs do within the Derry and Strabane Council area.

“Usually clubs are having to ask their members to assist with fund raising drives to help with on-going running costs but this fund will hopefully help lessen that burden.

“A total of 60k has been set aside by Councils Health and Community directorate to fund this initiative with each club eligible to apply for a maximum of £2000 each.

“This fund is aimed at clubs who own and maintain facilities and speaking to some of them over the last few days they widely welcome the establishment of this fund and the opportunity to apply.

“This will be a one-off programme delivered this year but something that I have suggested to council officers that we should be looking at for future years.

“Council will be holding information sessions with clubs over the coming weeks and I would encourage as many clubs who feel they may be entitled to apply to attend and take advantage of this funding opportunity,” added Councillor Tierney.
