Decision to disqualify Councillor Derek Hussey the ‘right one’ – Duffy

Sinn Fein councillor Sandra Duffy

SINN Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has said the decision to disqualify Derek Hussey from his role as a Councillor is the right one.

The party’s leader on Derry City & Strabane Council was commenting after it was revealed on Tuesday that the UUP Councillor will face a 15 month disqualification for three separate drink driving offences.

The decision was made by the Local Government Commissioner for Standards during a hearing in Belfast.

The ban comes into effect on Tuesday, July 16.

However, Mr Hussey’s solicitor said that they plan to appeal the disqualification to the High Court.

Said Cllr Duffy: “The decision to disqualify Derek Hussey from his role as Councillor for 15 months is the right one.

“Derek Hussey has displayed an atrocious disregard for public safety through multiple charges for drink driving.

“Last year Sinn Féin tabled a motion of no-confidence in Mr Hussey when he was Deputy Mayor and objected to Derek Hussey’s appointment as Chair of the Policing Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

“Tuesday’s decision is a victory for local families bereaved by drink drivers, who have campaigned for a zero tolerance approach to drink driving.”
