Medical school proposed for Magee Campus

A SERIES of high-level engagements will take place this week as part of the drive to secure a graduate medical school and further expansion at Magee university, Sinn Féin’s Elisha McCallion has revealed.

The Foyle MP confirmed that she will be leading a party delegation to meet with the head of the Civil Service David Sterling in Derry today (Tuesday).

This will be followed by a party leaders meeting with Mr. Sterling in Belfast on Wednesday while Derry City and Strabane District Council will also debate a Sinn Féin motion on the following day.

“This week will see a number of engagements aimed at driving forward progress on the expansion of Magee and particularly the commitment to open a graduate entry medical school,” Elisha McCallion said.

“The political decision to site a medical school at Magee has already been taken.

“That is the message which the Head of the Civil Service will hear loud and clear in my discussion with him and I have no doubt it will be echoed in the meeting with the leaders of the five main political parties.

“There is cross-party support for the medical school and for the overall expansion of the university.

“The onus now is on the Civil Service to action that by ensuring the business case for the medical school is signed off by the Department of Health.

“The medical school is a transformative project for the entire north west region and it needs to go ahead without further delay.

“The overall expansion at Magee is also crucial to the economic regeneration of the region so there is also an onus on Ulster University to prioritise that commitment.

“In partnership with all of the stakeholders in the north west, I will continue to keep the pressure on the Civil Service, the university and both governments, to ensure that commitments to this city are honoured and that investment is delivered for the key strategic projects we require including the medical school and Magee expansion.”
