‘Green Card’ insurance plan highlights disastrous impact of No-Deal Brexit – Anderson

Drivers crossing the Derry/Donegal border will need insurance ‘Green Card’ in event of no deal Brexit

SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said confirmation that motorists in the North of Ireland will need an insurance ‘green card’ to drive across the border shows how disastrous a no-deal Brexit scenario would be.

Martina Anderson said: “Confirmation from the Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis that following Brexit motorists in the North will need to hold a Green Card to travel across the border in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

“All of this shows once again that the architects and supporters of the Tory Brexit do not know or care about the realities for people living in border areas and all those who cross the border on a daily basis to work, study and socialise.

“Alternatively, if the Withdrawal Agreement is ratified, there will be a transition period until at least 31 December 2020, during which vehicles from the north will be exempt from carrying a Green Card to enter the EU.

“This reinforces the need for the backstop to be maintained and for the Irish government and EU27 to stand firm and ensure we are not driven over a cliff edge by Tory Brexiteers and their allies.”
